I’m delighted to share with you the great news about winning the Medici service design award for this project. I completed a ten minute presentation which you can now view here and the project has had very good feedback during the degree show so far. Winding up

So I produced some sketch models of the concept and re drew it on computer to complete a new render. I will post these at a later day because I have been advised to take out a patent. Here’s some rough images of the model in construction. I am planning for the degree show to construct a final model that is professional and as close to the real thing as possible.

Finally, I have put together a small video showing how the concept might work. It’s a sketch video, just to illustrate the how PO Box might work. I have also included some graphics (which may take a wee bit longer than normal to download, be patient!) to give you mroe detail on how it might work. I would really appreciate feedback on the concept. If you think there is anything missing from it, something that might not work, or perhaps you really like it, I’d love to hear from you! It would be great if you could also show it to others or pass on the blog link to someone you might think will be able to provide feedback.

ha, I’m in heaven.

I wonder if I could cheekily insert PO Box into postman pat footage, that would be amazing. Anyway, I am in January going to be working on a short film, in the style of a postman pat episode, well it will be graphical but postman pat friendly narrative with funky (well funky may be the wrong word…twee) music. Maybe I can take the tune of postman pat and sing PO Box instead. Can’t wait to start it, when this dissertation is out the way.

PO Box closing

So, I have been a bit neglectful of keeping up to date with the blog, its beena really tough few weeks to refine what my concept will be and work on graphics too, (not to mention my dissertation).

Anyway, just to keep up to date, I am currently sitting at about 6 days left to completion, I have a solid concept, that is very simple but ticks all the boxes of my specification.

I have entitled it PO Box. In one quick description, its a Post Office in a portable box (suitcase) that operates around a set of small rural populations, possibly about 4-5 villages in a week. It is run by volunteers, moved around by the Royal Mail van on their delivery and pick up rounds, and is supported by a main Post Office that is still open in a larger town. All will become clear but just to give you a wee image of what I’m thinking here is some work in progress,.

The boxes include a chip and pin machine for transactions, a laptop connected to the post office network which connects via the internet which will be installed by BT and the PO in the setup period inside village halls, or where the PO will be run from, a printer to print off forms, a set of scales to ascertain the correct postage for letters/parcels, and a phone, the old school touchpoint which can be used by customers or the volunteers for support, and a space for stock, stamps, till rolls, tape, pens, etc.

Hope this gives you a very rough idea of what I am proposing.

So tomorrow is our very important presentation to run concepts by all the tutours. pretty scary. I have spent hours trying to condense my research into two sheets, still have three to go, it’s 20:30, and it all begins at 9:30am tomorrow morning. Im off to get coffee and go home and play with lego.

I’m not going to post the final sheets yet, they’re not final, but there is a taster of the general layout below. (quick photos of my screen). Its very very very very hard to condense a service into 5 sheets…although for the final presentation I’d like to make a small animation/comic strip thats narrated like a postman pat episode. For the meantime, and the purpose of flat graphics I have come up with a very quick and effective way to create a cartoon strip.

All you need is:

Lego figures

Blu tack

Monitor

Pictures of scenery/setting ideal to what you want to communicate.

You will see below. I think it’s really effective, obviously it isn’t exactly a pure picture, the camera picks up the lines on the screen, but it is very very fast and cheap way to communicate an idea. See what you think below, there is some shots of me messing around at my desk.

Anyway, tremendous amount to do and I’m hungry. Lasagne time. Then 3 sheets to conquer.
